A LETTER TO MY SON ON HIS 1ST BIRTHDAY

a letter to my son, first birthday, one year old, open letter, Las Vegas blogger, Vegas blogger, beach baby, mommy and baby, mommy and me, sweet moments, sweet baby, fashion blogger, mommy blogger, lifestyle blogger, Lindsey Gurk, Lindsey Simon, The Nomis Niche

It’s been one year since Ollie made me a mommy. I wrote a letter to him on his due-date, and want to continue the tradition. It’s personal, but you all have been part of this journey since the beginning. I feel like it’s fair to share this with you as well.

Dear Ollie,

One year ago today you came into this world. I can still remember all the emotions of that day as if it were happening right this very moment.

I remember the feeling I had when they first put you on my chest. You were so tiny, fragile and crying of course, but when they put you in my arms and I told you “I’m your Mama”, you stopped crying. You opened your eyes to look and see the face of the voice you’ve been hearing (probably nonstop) for almost a year. I was in complete awe of you.

In that moment I felt a love stronger than anything I’ve felt before in my entire life. It’s true that I loved you before you were born, but actually holding you in my arms… it was different.

It’s hard to explain, but it felt like a little piece of my heart was now with you. I felt this tug. Like an invisible string connecting our two hearts together. I know, it sounds silly, but maybe one day you’ll understand.

One year later, that tug is still there. It’s just as strong, and I imagine it’s going to be there forever. I want you to know that no matter where you are; school, a friend’s house, visiting with your grandparents, that little invisible string is always going to be there connecting us. If you miss me, give it a little tug and I’ll come running.

Ollie, you have made your daddy and me so incredibly happy. That silly sense of humor is already starting to show through. Between your “serious looks” and pretending to eat stuff off the floor just to see our reaction, you definitely keep us laughing. You seem to like to “trick” us… which I find hysterical and also terrifying as we enter your toddler years.

You also love to dance to whatever music is playing (right now you like Elton John, Queen, whatever Elmo Sings on Sesame Street, and you also like to get down to Beyonce. Before nap time we listen to The Beatles or James Taylor, and I sing you Billy Joel’s “Lullaby”). You hand out kisses and hugs nonstop and even blow kisses to strangers in the grocery store checkout line. Please don’t ever lose that. This world needs more friendly, loving and kind people like you.

In the first letter I wrote you, I promised to teach you the importance of faith and family and to make you understand that, no matter what, you are never alone. One year later, this is still my same promise to you.

Ollie, you are the light of my life and your daddy’s as well. We love you unconditionally. Don’t ever forget that.

Love, Mama
