First, let’s break down the categories…

FRESH & FUNKY

I consider fresh and funky pieces to be anything that’s out of the ordinary. It could be a denim jacket with you’re name embellished on the back, socks with a sushi print on them, or a dinosaur sweatshirt. Thrift stores are great for finding these unique pieces.

FANCY

Metallics, sequins, (faux) fur, embellishments, etc. Anything that makes you say, “Mariah Carey would probably love that” is definitely in the “fancy” department.

COMBINING THE TWO

If you’re going all out fancy, by all means… go for it. Want to go get coffee in a cat print tuxedo on a Sunday? Be my guest. Personal style is just that… personal. What you wear should portray how you feel that day.

I find that I’m most drawn to outfits that have different styles juxtaposed together. I’ve mentioned before I love mixing masculine and edgy pieces like a tuxedo pant or leather jacket with feminine items too (like a metallic high heel or a lace dress).

In my opinion, it’s just more interesting to look at. I prefer to look pulled together, but not stuffy.

MATH BEHIND THE MIXING

I’ve come up with this equation for this type of style.

CLASSIC x 2 + FUNKY + FANCY + WILDCARD

Let me explain…

I’ve already described what the “funky and fancy” is, but now we add classic as well?

It’s actually pretty easy…

Classic is basically anything that doesn’t go out of style. Denim jeans, black heels, black blazer, white t-shirt, striped long sleeve top, structured bag, etc. But, it can also mean your hair and makeup.

If I did my hair in crazy braids for this look, it would be a little too much for my comfort level. So, I kept it simple and classic with a middle part. If I had a crazy bedazzled purse, it wouldn’t been too much fancy. So, I kept it simple with a bowler bag.

Now for the wildcard. This is basically whatever you want it to be, as long as it makes you happy. For instance, I consider these pants both funky and fancy. I could easily wear them with sneakers and a tee, or with heels and a black blazer to a holiday party.

Which means my outfit was:

CLASSIC X2 (hair and bag) + FUNKY (Dinosaur sweatshirt) + FANCY ( Furry heels) + WILDCARD (gold pants)

Is that making more sense?

Again, personal style is all about wearing what you want. There is no real equation for putting an outfit together, this is just a simple suggestion if you’re having trouble.

Bottom line is, wear what makes you happy. As long as you’re confident that’s really all that matters.

Love, Lindsey
