HEALTHY HAIR HACKS

Because your hair is the crown you never take off…

Over the past few months, I’ve been putting in some extra effort to get my hair back to what it once was (don’t go, platinum people!). Along the way, I’ve discovered some great hair hacks that not only help strengthen your hair but also prevent breakage AND help it grow quicker! Here’s what I found…

CHILL WITH THE SHAMPOO

It doesn’t matter what kind of hair you have; curly, straight, or somewhere in between, over-shampooing can cause excessive dryness. Experts recommend shampooing your hair two to three times per week. I’ve been following this guideline and I really do think it’s helped the overall look of my hair and has also helped it grow faster.

MANE & TAIL FOR QUICKER GROWTH

Yes, the stuff you used to see ads for in the back of your Seventeen Magazine. A hairdresser told me a client of hers was using it whose hair was growing so fast. The hairdresser used it too and saw the same results. So… I picked some up. After just a few short months, my hair was noticeably longer. My hairdresser was even impressed. I’m telling you… I don’t know the secret ingredient or why it really works. All I know is it does and I shouldn’t keep this secret to myself.

APPLY DRY SHAMPOO TO HAIR AT NIGHT

When you’re only washing your hair two to three times a week – a good dry shampoo is key. (I like Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo, which I just picked up from Neiman Marcus over at Fashion Show Las Vegas – smells awesome!). Another important part of this equation is where and when to apply it. You really only need to spray it to your scalp since that’s where we produce the most oil. Also, apply dry shampoo at night. It’ll soak up the oil while you’re sleeping and in the morning you only need some touch-ups and can style your hair as usual.

HAIR MASK BEFORE WORKING OUT

Multitasking at its finest. Before working out, apply a mask from mid-shaft to ends, then throw your hair into a bun. The heat from exercising will help the mask penetrate and do its job more effectively. (Some best-selling options include masks by Briogeo, Amika and Christophe Robin – all available via Sephora inside Fashion Show Las Vegas.)

SKIP THE TOWEL & TRY A T-SHIRT INSTEAD

Using a towel to dry your hair can cause breakage and frizz. The grooves of the towel are aggressive on the cuticles and leave our locks feeling dry. Post-shower, try swapping in a cotton t-shirt instead. Flip your hair over upside down and pull your hair through the opening of your tee. Twist the t-shirt until you reach the end and tuck it underneath the nape of your neck.

MAKE REGULAR SALON VISITS

Heading to the salon every 4-8 weeks helps keep your hair groomed and healthy. Regular trims promote healthy growth and treatments (like deep conditioning) keep your strands in good shape. If you’re looking for a local Las Vegas salon, try stopping by Claude Baruk Salon coming this fall at Fashion Show. I’ve interviewed him a couple times before and have seen both him and his staff work on multiple types of hair. They’re amazing!

GET CREATIVE TO AVOID HOT TOOLS

Hot tools are the death of hair. I have to style my hair when I go into work, so on my off days, I try to give my hair a little break. Braids are a great hairstyle that keeps hair out of your face and still looks cute. I also like a sleek low bun (looks great with a hair mask on too so you can look chic while also healing your hair). Also, something new I’ve been trying is headscarves. They are so cute and hide your messy hair!
