Easy ways to make money selling your unwanted clothes

outfit

I’m a big believer in recycling clothing. One of the reasons is because it reduces your carbon-footprint, (two cheers for Mother Earth!) another is because it’s one of the easiest ways to make cold… hard…. CASH! I love thrift shopping (the three outfits you see above all incorporate something I found at a consignment shop), but I also resell a lot of my clothes too. It cleans out my closet and puts a little more money in my pocket to buy… what else… more clothes.

While ebay is a great outlet for buying and selling, there are now more options than ever to do it – and sometimes you don’t even have to leave home! Here are a few ways to make ‘dat money honey…

Poshmark: It’s an app that simplifies listing an item for sale. You just take a photo of the piece you want to sell with your phone (make sure it’s a nice pic) and upload it!  It asks you a few questions like the condition, how much it originally cost and how much you’re selling it for them – BAM – it’s listed. You’ll find high-end labels like Rebecca Minkoff and Chanel as well as lower-priced brands like H&M and Forever 21. There are also “Posh Parties” which is when a few friends get together to sell their items. Think of it as an online garage sale. When you make a sale on Poshmark, they provide you with a pre-paid, pre-addressed label. Once it’s packaged, just drop it off at UPS or have it picked up from your home for free!

threadUP: Another online alternative that was originally catered to mom’s. Kids outgrow their clothes fast – and this is a convenient way to declutter your home. However, it’s expanded into something more and now you can find amazing deals on everything from handbags, jewelry, etc. Items are typically listed for 70% off their retail price and anything that doesn’t get bought is donated to charity. To start, go to the website and order a bag. Pack up the bag and send it in by dropping it off at UPS or you can schedule a pickup.

SnobSwap: This one is for those that LOVE designer labels; Christian Louboutin, Gucci, Hermes… and the list goes on. They authenticate every single item for sale so you know you’ll get big bucks for your gently used designer digs. The average shopper is a woman between the ages of 20 and 45 who loves a good deal. 1 snobswap\

Grailed: While most of these resale sites cater to women, Grailed is all about the dudes. They will sell your luxury brand / designer items, (Saint Laurent, Acne)  but also take in more mainstream items as well (J.Crew, Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren). It seems like streetwear (hoodies, sneakers, t-shirts) sell well on this site.

Buffalo Exchange: Not an app, but I had to include it because it’s my favorite. Buffalo Exchange is a brick and mortor store where you can either sell your clothes for cash or do a “trade”. If you trade your clothes you’ll end up getting more money to use in store than if you were to take the cash option. I’ve fond some seriously nice pieces at our local spot – some even with the tags still on them! Look online to see where you can find the closest store near you. If you’re in Las Vegas – our location is on 1209 S. Main Street in the Art District. I’ll probably see you there!

I hope this helps you out a little bit when deciding what to do with your unwanted clothes. Now let’s make some money ya’ll!

YAY! I actually just sold my first thing on Poshmark. I love it. Another tip if you decide to use that app… if you model the clothes they tend to sell even faster. Happy to help! 😉

Great tips! I badly need to declutter my closet, and as much as I like to donate clothes, there are a few pieces that are actually worth something.

Agreed! I’ve been using Poshmark lately. It’s seriously so simple and takes like 6 minutes to upload something. Good luck!
