Pregnancy is beautiful, but figuring out how to dress your bump can get pretty ugly at times. It gets stressful! You’re body is changing and you need to re-learn how to dress it. Luckily, there are a lot of great brands out there that offer stylish maternity outfits. I’ll talk about those brands, as well as how to get by without having to spend too much on maternity clothes.

SHOP MY LOOK

AVOID BUYING TOO MUCH TOO QUICKLY

I was still able to fit into most of my clothes up until about month 4 or 5. Try to avoid buying too many clothes too soon as your body is constantly changing! The first maternity purchase I made was a few jeans/trousers from Target. As my bump was growing, I wore these pants with a lot of oversized sweaters and jackets. Billowy blouses and breezy dresses are also a great option for concealing your bump until you’re ready to reveal that you’re pregnant.

When it was difficult to fit into my old clothes, I shopped for budget-friendly pieces that #1 would grow with my baby bump or #2 I could wear after the baby was born.

Some of my favorite maternity brands include Ingrid & Isabel, ASOS Maternity, PinkBlush, Topshop Maternity, Jessica Simpson Maternity  as well as Target and Old Navy’s maternity sections.

CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE

At six months (or when your cute bump starts to really show) I would suggest putting together a mini “pregnancy wardrobe”. It can get really frustrating sifting through your closet everyday trying to find something that will fit and make you feel good. I currently have a clothing rack filled with pregnancy-appropriate pieces that I know will fit. It makes getting dressed so much easier!

UNDER-THINGIES

I had to stop wearing thongs about 5 months in. They weren’t stretchy enough and felt so uncomfortable! The best thing you can do is go out and buy a few pairs of stretchy underwear to get you through. Also, those boobies are going to grow… quickly! Mine did at least. I went out and bought a few bras that were supportive and comfortable.

Also, if you haven’t already heard of the BellaBand, it’s a pregnant lady pot of gold. It helps you extend the time you can wear your regular pants and jeans.

Lastly, I highly suggest getting some slip shorts. I purchased a pair of maternity shape wear shorts  and love how them! They keep my bump looking smooth and are pretty comfortable! The point isn’t to make your bump smaller, but to give it some support. Also, if your thighs have grown, the extra silky layer will prevent chaffing.

A STRETCHY PENCIL SKIRT FIXES ALL

When it’s time to put your bump on full display, I highly suggest the stretchy pencil skirt. I recently bought a two pack from asos and love them! Just put it on with a t-shirt or button-up tied at the waist. You’ll notice as your belly starts to grow, not all t-shirts will fit like they used to. This solves the problem of showing your underbelly and puts those old tops to good use!

MIDI AND MAXI DRESSES THAT YOU CAN WEAR POSTPARTUM

If you’re trying not to spend too much on maternity clothes, one option is sizing up on regularly sized dresses. I like dresses that have a little bit of detail, whether it be a fun print, ruffles, or a bow. Just make sure there’s enough room or that the material is stretchy so you can wear it throughout your pregnancy.

BUY THE BASICS

In addition to streetwear clothes, you’ll also want clothes that you can comfortably lounge in. Get some comfortable leggings and maternity tanks/tees that you can style over and over again. I’d also stock up on longer tops that go past your hips. They add length so your belly stays covered.

SPEND ON ACCESSORIES

Now is probably the time to get that bag you’ve been eyeballing. It will always fit, plus why not treat yourself? You deserve it! Right after I found out I was pregnant I bought the Gucci Soho Disco bag I had been eyeballing forever. I still wear it all the time. Best. Purchase. Ever.
